Caring for the Caregiver

A UNICEF training module to build frontline workers’ skills in strengths-based counselling to increase caregivers’ emotional well-being. The counselling training covers stress management, self-care, and conflict-resolution skills.

Who is it for?

For use by frontline workers who take care of caregivers.

Why is it useful?

  • CFC is important for the successful delivery of any programmes that rely on caregiver capacity for success;
  • CFC provides frontline workers with skills and activities to address barriers to responsive caregiving by encouraging self-care, family engagement, and social support;
  • The module translates well-established evidence on maternal mental health into practical activities, which can be used to support caregivers and their families;
  • It was initially developed for the UNICEF West and Central Africa Regional Office (WCARO) by expert consultants, with a series of consultations and pilot training activities in two countries: Mali and Sierra Leone;
  • The prototype is currently being validated in eight countries through implementation research;
  • A new guide on Caring for the Caregiver during the COVID-19 Crisis is also available.
