Accelerating progress on early childhood development for children under 5 years with disabilities by 2030

A scientific paper (Viewpoint) published in The Lancet Global Health journal highlights the urgent need to prioritise early childhood development for beneficiaries of global child survival initiatives with lifelong disabilities, especially in low-income and middle-income countries.

Who is it for?

For use by decision-makers in global and regional health funding agencies for newborn and child health, and national governments.

Why is it useful?

It presents up-to-date evidence on:

  • Why global initiatives for improved maternal and child health services (e.g., early detection and prompt intervention) and the strengthening of national health systems are key to addressing childhood developmental disabilities;
  • How and why to obtain priority consideration for children under 5 years with developmental disabilities to accelerate progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 in a context where global investments in child disability have declined by 11.4% between 2007 and 2016.
